Tar Heeled fans were treated to a nice game on Sunday, but the disappointment in the final score is nothing compared to the disappointment that was on display.
The game was stopped at the 1:30 mark of the first quarter when the Tar Heeds missed a three-point attempt.
Then, after a Tar Heeling miss from Deon Lewis, the team took the ball into the locker room and the players went to the showers.
That was when the game began to die down.
A few minutes later, Tar Heed players were talking about the loss of the game.
Tar Heeels quarterback Tanner Mangum said, “I’m just frustrated, but I’m not going to take it personally.
I know I made a lot of mistakes.”
Tar Heel coach Brad Stevens added, “It’s just not us.”
Tar Sheel coach Mark Stoops said the team wasn’t in a mood to talk about the defeat and was simply disappointed in itself.
“I think we were just trying to do everything that we could to get a win out of this game,” Stoops told the Tar Sheels’ official website.
“But we didn’t get it done.”
The Tar Hees are 0-4 in their last five games, with their next game at home against the Duke Blue Devils.
They are 2-3 this season at home, with the other two losses coming by four points or less.
In the locker rooms, players were clearly frustrated.
Some players said they felt like they were being punished for being good and didn’t feel like they deserved to win.
“I can’t tell you what I was thinking,” defensive tackle Justin Harris told reporters after the game, per the AP.
“It didn’t make sense.
We didn’t play well.
I think it’s just the nature of the business.”
The coaches said they will discuss the outcome of the season with the players.
The players have said they have no interest in talking to the coaches about the situation.
After the game Sunday, the coaches did not want to get into specifics about the coaching change.
“There is no need for any further comment on this matter,” the team said in a statement.
“We are working on getting the players back on the field as quickly as possible.
We are excited about our upcoming schedule and our upcoming year.”
The team’s next home game is Saturday against the Michigan Wolverines.
